Lake Tahoe is proud to host Stage 1, the overall starting point of the Amgen Tour of California, on May 15. This historic starting place will be the highest elevation location in the 6-year history of the tour. Riders will begin at Stateline, the California-Nevada border, and ride along the circumference of the lake a full one and a half times before reaching the first finish line at the on the North Shore.

Along their journey of this beautiful Alpine lake, riders will endure a series of altitude hikes and 40-mph descents as they pass through the magnificent scenery this destination has to offer.  From the casino core in South Lake Tahoe, they’ll circle Edgewood Golf Course and continue into California on Highway 50 for an easy sprint right through town. Next, the riders will make the first hike up scenic Highway 89, capturing the stunning, world-renowned views of Emerald Bay and the west shore. Continuing north, they’ll climb 7,200 ft. Brockway Summit, the highest point of this stage, and pass Kings Beach, Crystal Bay, and Incline Village. They’ll then face another challenging leg, hiking up Spooner Summit along the Lake Tahoe’s Nevada territory before completing the first lap and descending back to Stateline and repeating the ride through the south and west shores. Street shows and side events will line the streets of North and South Lake Tahoe on the day of the tour. These events include the Lake Tahoe Expo and a BMX Demo in South Lake Tahoe and a street fair with family activities and the Amgen Lifestyle Festival in North Lake Tahoe, among others. Area resorts and restaurants will have a variety of live music and entertainment, serving as the perfect after parties for this day long event.

Prior to the start of the Amgen Tour of California, the Lake Tahoe Basin will host a ten-day countdown featuring parties, shows, and events around the lake. This series of entertainment will begin with Cinco de Mayo parties, and will include benefit dinners, movie showings, bike parades, winetasting, and a show by Sammy Hagar and the Wabos at Harrah’s South Shore Room. Last week, ski resorts around the lake announced their tentative closing dates. Among these, Heavenly and Kirkwood both projected April 24^th as their last day for the 2010-11 ski season. (As of today, Sierra-At-Tahoe has not announced a closing date.) To wrap up their season, Heavenly is hosting a “Spring Loaded” series of events complete with ski and snowboarding competitions, parties, and pond skimming.  Click here for a complete schedule of events.

This transient period between winter and summer is the optimal time to admire the waterfalls at their best. The sun beaming over the snow-capped mountains provides various picturesque falls worth the hike. Some must-sees include Horsetail Falls, Eagle Falls, and Cascade falls. Each waterfall is easily accessible through forest trails that are short drive from South Lake Tahoe.

Golfing is also a popular spring activity in the area. The weather this time of year is perfect for being outside for an extended period of time before the summer heat rolls in. Carson Valley Golf Course, an affordable local favorite, is located just over Kingsbury Grade and two miles south of Gardnerville. This 18-hole course is known for is abundance of trees, and the cool rush of the Carson River.

Spending time in Lake Tahoe during the spring allows you to avoid the crowds and make the most of an exclusively ideal time. You can take advantage of the season-end or season-opening deals offered in the basin. You have the choice of having a crazy spring break getaway, or just relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the environment.

La Niña is having a big effect on what the weather does this season. “La Niña is in place and will strengthen and persist through the winter months, giving us a better understanding of what to expect between December and February,” said Mike Halpert, deputy director of the Climate Prediction Center. Even though La Niña results are more difficult to accurately forecast, La Niña winters seem to bring more rain and snow than usual.

Could Lake Tahoe expect another March miracle this year? We are hoping so! Come up and enjoy the fresh snow and the beautiful views of Lake Tahoe.

• Skiing/Snowboarding- With 7 premier ski resorts close by, you’ll be sure to find the terrain for your skill level.
• Ice Skating/Tubing – a seasonal ice skating rink is installed at Heavenly Village and almost every ski resort has a tubing option for the kids who are looking for a quick thrill on the mountain.
• Snowmobiling- if you’re looking for a unique way to experience the Sierras, this is the adventure for you. Several tour companies in the area will give you access to exciting trails that are easy to navigate for the whole family.
• Photography Tours- This is the perfect activity to feed your creativity. Several tours offer transportation to the most beautiful “secret” spots around the lake. A real treat for all photographers and nature lovers.

A notable exception is the grove of Aspens located at Bourne Curve just west of our office at the Pine Cone Resort on US 50.  They are currently at their peak but that could end soon due to a weather system that is forecast to arrive Saturday afternoon.
